As soon as IMS (a new architectural framework for delivering IP to mobile users) appeared, it became widely accepted by many current mobile providers. A demonstration project sponsored by the European Space Agency has been developed which involved the world''s leading mobile phone manufacturers and the leading European satellite providers. Its purpose is to demonstrate the possibility to use IMS over a two-way satellite link provided by Astra2Connect.

AT's role in this project was to integrate existing SATMODE application servers into an IMS compliant application server and to write server components for a Video Interactive Application demo. Integration included an implementation of the IMS ISC interface to connect existing SATMODE functionality with IMS. Part of the VIA demo included delivery of instant messages to subscribed clients. For this purpose we developed components that integrate into the existing Messaging horizontal service of SATMODE. This way, existing SATMODE applications can deliver instant messages to IMS users.
