In September, three Amphinicy employees visited PyConUK in Cardiff. PyCon UK is the annual gathering of the UK Python community and its friends from around the world. The conference took place in the positively regal Cardiff City Hall, a building with beautiful architecture in the center of Cardiff where more than five hundred Python enthusiasts attended talks about various topics in Python world.
The conference lasted (only) five days and offered a lot of interesting talks and inspiring workshops while the last day of conference was dedicated to workshops only. Presenters from around the world came to share their thoughts, solutions and experiences with Python. People in software industry, from devops to front-end developers and people from other fields were showing how they use Python in everyday work. Talks in main hall were followed by speech-to-text technology. Two stenographers transcribed every talk almost instantaneously with near-perfect precision which helped audience to understand the talk.
Every visitor could apply for lightning talks, become a presenter for 5 minutes and share some interesting things about Python with audience.
A lot of talks were about Internet of things (IoT) and using Python to program Raspberry Pis to build various devices. We were especially excited about an interesting piece of hardware called micro:bit that was presented. Micro:bit is small ARM-based embedded system designed by BBC for use in computer education. It contains processor, Bluetooth, micro USB connector and various sensors like accelerometer, magnetometer, gyroscope etc. Free micro:bits were given to visitors. (Many visitors queued to grab a free coffee but instead they got a free microbit). We can’t wait to play around with it!
Important topic of conference was computing education and how to bring Python and programming in general closer to youngsters. It was stressed how important education is for development of society. Youngest visitors had the opportunity to learn some basics of programming though interesting games.
It was surprising how friendly and welcoming everyone was at the conference. Atmosphere at the conference was really inspiring and encouraging, people were eager to chat and share ideas. The conference was great experience and definitely worth a visit to anyone, from experienced Python developers to beginners in programming.
For goodbye, many thanks and congratulations on great job from Amphinicy employees. Hopefully, we will meet next year!
